Day Two…“People had a habit of looking at me as if I were some kind of mirror instead of a person’ – Marilyn Monroe

We started our day on a breakfast of poached eggs provided by our darling host, Betty Royle (now a firm friend, as this is our third stay with lovely 87 year old Betty whilst performing or rehearsing in York). Betty got the eggs off of the milkman John, who we met at a fabulous village charity brunch on Sunday (Betty took us for a morning out on the town). It was here that we discovered John likes a lot of milk in his tea (well he is the milkman after all). John also provided us with, at Betty’s request, a pot of double cream, which we have been dolloping in our coffee – well how could we say no when it was so generously gifted to us?

So needless to say we were full when beginning rehearsals this morning. Feeling so well fed, we thought what better time than now to start looking at the hourglass figure. This led to conversations about our insecurities (naturally), leading on to how these insecurities translate into our work. Following discussions revealed common ground in a need to prove ourselves, be it socially, creatively or looking back to childhood holidays when we just had to jump of that high diving board like our older brothers were doing. This feeling has stuck with us.

Is this where feminism exists for us now? In an attempt to prove ourselves as capable as our older brothers? Working as artists, we don’t have big salaries or powerful positions to use as ammunition, but we do have a creative outlet that we have had to, and continue to have to, work so hard to achieve. Why doesn’t this feel like it competes? And at the risk of posing further Carrie-Sex-and-the City-esque-rhetorical-questions, why do we have this desire to beat the boys in a game we aren’t even playing?

Perhaps the whole process of making this show and pitting ourselves against Marilyn is an omission that our lives don’t feel important or exciting enough? Or perhaps we want Monroe’s contradictions and demons to make us feel more secure in our own struggles and failures? How do we go about ‘proving ourselves’? And why aren’t we succeeding at it thus far?

Writing this late in the day, it seems time to do another Carrie… close the mac, stop with the incessant self-questioning and go for dinner with the girls. Well, we actually have to go and pick a projector up in Harrogate – I can’t remember Carrie ever having to do this, but you get the jist.

Until tomorrow...

Perhaps you could interview Betty so she could shed some light on the Marilyn era seeing as it was part of her history! Marilyn would be 87 years old too now... :)
